Los sistemas fotovoltaicos Off-grid se refiere al modo de generación de energia que no es conectada a la red eléctrica. La principal caracteristica es que utiliza baterías para almacenar energia, la cual sera utilizada en la noche. En el campo civil, el sistema off-grid es principalmente utilizado en poblaciones lejanas, areas de cultivo, islas, mesetas y zonas deserticas para propositos de alumbrado, radio, television y otras necesidades. En el campo industrial, este sistema es principamente utilizado en el area de comunicación, reles de satelites, televisión, sistema de bombeo, anodos de protección para tuberias de combustible, estaciones de monitoreo ambiental, carreteras, etc. En las regiones donde se disponga de Generadores Eolicos y pequeñas Centrales hidroeléctricas, se puede establecer sistemas de generacion combinada de energía; como pueden ser un sistema de generacion Solar y eolico.
